Characters of Shardfall
Kessa

AN INVENTIVE MIND · SIX GOLDEN RINGS
Curiosity is a kind of courage.
Give Kessa a faulty perimeter alarm and she'll complain about the hike. Give her an impossible set of footprints, and good luck getting her to stop asking questions.
She's a sharp-eyed tracker and an inventive fighter. Her six golden rings can form blades, shields, or something altogether more practical, depending on what the moment calls for. She's trained to handle danger, though understanding what she's facing is usually her first choice.
That instinct extends to people. Kessa is warm, outspoken, and far more interested in who you are than where you come from or what title you carry. She'll give a stranger a chance, speak up when something feels wrong, and probably ask one more question when everyone else is ready to move on.
Mona

MOON ELF NOBLE · BEARER OF THE MOONVEIL KATANA
The sword isn't the difficult part.
Mona Moonveil has a habit of looking half-asleep while noticing just about everything. She can spot trouble brewing across a tavern, appreciate the fine stitching on someone's coat, and decide her tea needs another minute, all without saying much.
Born into one of Selenor's great noble houses, Mona carries the Moonveil Katana, a treasured weapon passed down through generations of her family. She's an exceptional swordswoman, but knowing how to wield a blade is considerably easier than knowing when to leave it sheathed. Beneath her composed exterior lies a fierce temper, sharpened by loss and years of unanswered questions. Sometimes she has every reason to be angry. Acting on that anger is another matter.
Fortunately, there's more to Mona than duty and discipline. She can become surprisingly absorbed in beautiful craftsmanship, an unfamiliar delicacy, or a particularly good cup of tea. She's spent years searching for someone she loves, and despite every disappointment, she's unwilling to give up.
For Mona, the hardest part of restraint isn't holding back her sword. It's learning what deserves her patience, what deserves her anger, and when it's finally time to act.
Riven

THORN ELF ROGUE
He has a point. That's the problem.
Riven Tharos rarely raises his voice. He doesn't need to. Ask him about Lyria's brightly lit streets, flowing water, and ancient magical wonders, and he'll ask you a different question: what happens when the people keeping it all running decide they know what's best for everyone else?
It's an uncomfortable question, especially because Riven has a compelling answer. He sees the Reclaimers' growing influence for what it could become: a world so dependent on their protection that freedom becomes little more than a comforting illusion. He speaks with conviction, intelligence, and a remarkable ability to make even his opponents reconsider what they believe.
But conviction has become something far more dangerous. Riven has little patience for compromise, and even less for those who insist that change must come without suffering. He believes the world is running out of time, and that sometimes people must be made to confront a truth they would rather ignore.
Riven doesn't delight in violence. He simply believes the consequences of doing nothing would be worse. And once he's convinced himself that the cause is just, there are frighteningly few things he won't consider necessary.
Liora

SUN ELF WARDWRIGHT · LYRIA'S CIVIC ADMINISTRATOR
She knows what waiting can cost.
Liora Brightfall has a remarkable talent for making an emergency seem manageable. A broken water line, a failing ward, three contradictory reports, and a dozen worried citizens? She'll have a plan before lunch, though she'll probably forget to eat it herself.
As Lyria's Civic Administrator, Liora takes her responsibilities personally. She's a gifted Wardwright, a compassionate leader, and a firm believer in the Reclaimers because she's seen what their work accomplishes. To her, progress isn't measured in grand promises. It's measured in clean water, safe streets, and people who get to go home to their families.
But Liora has learned what hesitation can cost. When lives are at stake, she's willing to make difficult decisions and accept the consequences herself. She genuinely believes that protecting people is worth the sacrifices it sometimes demands.
The trouble is, there's a fine line between taking responsibility for people and deciding what's best for them. And Liora isn't always certain where that line should be drawn.
